FAQ

On this page, I have tried to cover some of the most common queries I get from clients, but please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything else you would like to know or would like me to go into more detail, I’m more than happy to help.

What medium do you work in?

I currently only offer coloured pencils as this is my preferred medium, but in the future I hope to offer watercolours as a cheaper alternative, and I may eventually offer graphite. Don’t forget to look at my different styles. I currently offer a tonal sketch as well as my more traditional portrait. The tonal sketches are much more affordably priced.

Do you need photographs to work from?

Yes I like to have at least one good photograph to work from. These can be emailed or posted to me. Please look here for more information regarding photographs. The more photos you can provide the better as they all help me to get to know your pet’s personality.

Do you send worldwide?

Yes I do, I am based in the UK, but I am happy to post portraits worldwide and have sent pieces to USA, Australia, Netherlands, Sweden and Spain so far. I will quote postage during the order process if you let me know where you are and what size portrait you would like. My price list is in GBP, but there is a link to a converter below it. Please feel free to ask me if you would like me to convert the prices for you.

What is the process to order a portrait?

First off,  have a look at my price list and see if you know what size portrait you would like ordered. Don’t worry if you’re not sure I’m more than happy to help advise you and send you some examples of different sizes to show you how they look. Contact me using my details here. If you can also send me some pictures, let me know if there is a specific one you would like me to use for the portrait. This is the time we will discus how you want the portrait done and whether you would like a head/shoulders or full body, We will also discuss if there is going to be more than one subject, and if you want any sort of background (It doesn’t have to be the background in the photograph, we can put grass around the subject rather than him/her being sat on carpet etc.).

Please let me know as soon as you can whether there is a special date you need the portrait by and whether you are from outside the UK. Once we have discussed this and decided on a size, I will then give you an itemised quote, stating how much the deposit will be (25%), the final payment, P&P and framing/mounting if you request this too (This can be added on at any time during the order process, but please allow time for the frame to arrive as I order them). If you are happy to go ahead, then we sort out the deposit. I will give you a rough idea of when I hope to start the portrait, and I will contact you a week before I will start. I can also send you progress pictures if you would like to see them. Once the portrait is completed and you are fully happy with the portrait, then we will arrange the final payment. Your completed portrait will be posted as soon as payment has cleared.

How long will it take?

This will vary depending on the time of year. If it’s coming up to Christmas I can get booked up quite in advance so the sooner you can book in the better to avoid disappointment, but I always try my best to accommodate. After Christmas is normally my quietest period, and I can normally get you in within a couple of weeks of ordering, but later on in the year I have been known to get booked up 3-4 months in advance. I currently work part time in addition to drawing portrait’s which holds me back, but in the future I hope to be doing this full time. If you have a special date you would like your portrait done by, then please let me know. I will try my hardest to get it done in time for you, but the sooner you can book in the better. I will contact you the week before I start to check that everything is still ok and to see if there are any changes that you would like made to your order before I begin. Please remember, if you decide you would like the portrait bigger than first discussed, let me know as soon as you can so I can allow enough time to do it.

Can you frame/mount it for me?

I haven’t got a framer at the moment, but I’m quite happy to buy in frames and mounts and do them for you. Framing and mounting is always helpful when you are buying a portrait as a gift, as it’s nice to give it completed and ready to hang on the wall. I’m happy to do this to your price limit either a cheaper frame can be purchased or a higher quality wooden frame can be sought out. This can be discussed and quoted at any time during the order process.

How do I pay?

I accept payment via Paypal or bank transfer (Please note that you do not need to have a Paypal account to pay someone. I can send you a payment request, and the email will talk you through the process.) If you are in the UK, I also accept cheques or cash if you are local. You are also more than welcome to collect your portrait from me once completed. If you are from outside of the UK, then I would advise payment via Paypal.

I’m not sure what size would be best

This is a tricky question to answer, as we all have different opinions on this. I offer a wide range of sizes which you can see here on my price list. A number of these sizes are not offered by other artists. I find the most common sizes are 8×6″, 10×8″ and 12×16″. The size depends on how many subjects you want and whether you want head and shoulder or full body portraits. Please feel free to have a look at my gallery but I am more than happy to send examples of different sizes so you can get an idea of what level of detail can be achieved at each size.  Generally, the bigger the portrait the more detail I can get in, but the quality of the photograph will also affect the detail I can do. If the picture is not clear, then the detail will not be as good. In this case I would advise a smaller size. For a nice head study of a smaller bread of dog or a cat I would suggest an 8×6″, and for a medium/larger breed of dog or a horse I would suggest 10×8″ as a rough guide. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to see some examples. I’m more than happy to help advise. I have listed some examples of my most popular sizes here.

I would like a group portrait but I haven’t got pictures of them all together

That’s fine I’m happy to work from individual pictures of each pet. Sometimes this is better as I can see more detail than if it is a group photograph from a distance. If you have photos of them together to give me an idea of size difference, then this is always helpful as I like to try and keep my portraits in perspective. This also works if one of the pets is no longer with you, and you might not have pictures of them with another pet but would like them drawn together. I can put them together either as a group of head/shoulders or even as a full body group as long as the pictures are from a similar angle. Please look at me page about photographs for examples of this.
